Benefits of Treating Alcohol Problems in Residential Programs

When people become addicted to alcohol they need to seek help. Sadly alcohol addiction is a major problem in society and the cost of the disease is considerable. There are many programs available to help people and these programs can be roughly divided into two different types. The first is a day-care program where patients attend the sessions and at the end of the day go home. The second is where the patient resides in the facility and for the period of the treatment, becomes a fulltime patient.
Travel to and from a day center takes time and costs that much particularly if the alcoholic lives a fair distance from the center. A residential patient has no time constraints and no travel costs. Being able to reside in your place of caring brings relief and gives comfort just in itself.
One of the problems for a recovering alcoholic is their environment. At home they are comfortable. They have ready access to drink and it is the place where they often spent time drinking perhaps for many years. In a residential alcohol treatment center, the environment is friendly but different. There is no alcohol available. The residents are not in their familiar surrounds and thus stand a better chance to overcome their addiction.
The temptation to drink may be constantly present but the availability or opportunity varies dramatically depending on if you are a resident or a day patient. The day patient traveling home has the opportunity to stop and buy a drink. At the end of the final session in the residential facility, the patient is already home. They have no travel requirements and no opportunity to stop for a drink.
24/7 care is a brilliant advantage because the staff in the residential facility are trained professionals used to working with recovering alcoholics. The residents get fulltime care and can be helped at any time of the day or night.
Having fellow alcoholics around them means the residents can take strength from their fellow patients. They can share stories, trials and successes and give one another encouragement. This is a decided advantage over the day patient who may go home to an empty house or worse, to a partner who drinks albeit socially.
If you are seeking a program to help in your recovery from alcohol addiction or for a loved one, you should understand that not all residential facilities are the same. Check out what is available knowing the health, age and needs of the would-be resident. It may well be far better to live-in to help in your recovery but living in the right facility is equally as important.
