It sounds like stating the obvious but today's teenagers face a great many issues any one of which can cause them to suffer. And sometimes the suffering is serious even going as far as self-harm and death. As sad as it may be, these issues are real and millions of troubled teens and their families can attest to this fact.

One salient fact with teens is the development of their body. This is a challenging time in their life when issues of drugs, sexuality and body image confront them in so many ways. Teens cannot escape the pressure they encounter from the media, their peers and sometimes even from within their own family. It's a tough time for teens today.

Bullying has been in force since humans began but now there are new ways to bully the weak and unfortunate. Cyber bullying is rampant in many areas and every parent needs to be aware of how online bullying can cause serious harm.

Some of the worst cases involving troubled teens occur when the young person does not reveal their suffering. They suffer in silence. This is doubly bad because not only is the teen sad but little if anything is being done to help them. Parents should try to develop a strong bond and channel of communication with their children. Kids should feel able to tell their folks when they are in trouble.

Some teens are more sensitive than others and if a child has an issue with their appearance be it weight, skin problems or race or disability, cruel taunts can and often are made. This type of bullying is appalling but it does exist.

Fortunately there are programs in schools and on camps giving skills and strategies to children helping them handle bullying and other problems.

Parents should make themselves aware of the resources to tackle the issues faced by their kids. Families can confront such problems as a unit and work together to make their family unit a happy and healthy group.

Therapy for teens is available, as it is for parents, in a variety of ways and places. Counseling from a trained and experienced professional may be the key to helping your troubled teen break free from their sadness and allow them to resume a successful, happy and healthy lifestyle.

But the right counseling, the correct therapy is essential. You must match the treatment with the need. That's where a proper and thorough diagnosis of your troubled teen is vital.

And it's not just the kids who are going through a 'growing-up' time. Parents too enter a new environment where the rules they issued for their young children are possibly being challenged, even defied, by their rebellious teens. Parents too can benefit from counseling on ways to grow with your teen.

The therapy is available and when the parents and the troubled teens work together, when they move forward with both trying to help the other, then there is a great opportunity for success.

It can be a tough time but love, patience and the right counseling will make a world of difference and produce the desired and happy result.
